Traditional Indications: Dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), menorrhagia (abnormally heavy or long menstruation), polymenorrhea (menstrual cycles of greater than usual frequency), oligomenorrhea (scanty menstruation), amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation), anovulation (lack of ovulation), and infertility. It can also be used for premenstrual syndrome, menopause-related symptoms, insufficient lactation, mastodynia (pain in the breast), and premenstrual acne.
Physiologically, vitex promotes similar effects as a woman’s corpus luteum, increasing luteinizing hormone (LH) production by acting directly on the pituitary gland, and inhibiting the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).
