Practicing Ayurveda in the United States

--Legal licensure for any healthcare profession, including Ayurveda, is under the jurisdiction of each individual State. Currently, none of the U.S. states currently licenses Ayurvedic physicians as primary care physicians. However, many Ayurvedic physicians utilize their education and knowledge in combination with their other healthcare-related licensed credentials.

--For example, Medical Doctors, Registered Nurses, Registered Dietitians, Nutritionists, Yoga Instructors, Massage Therapists, Psychotherapists, Acupuncturists, Chiropractors, and other licensed healthcare professionals can incorporate Ayurvedic principles into their existing practice as long as they stay within the scope of practice outlined by their state license.

--Ayurvedic Medicine is a system of medicine intended to be practiced solely by fully-trained physicians. Like any other medical traditions, Ayurvedic physicians diagnose and treat conditions which often involve complex biochemical, physiological, cardiac, endocrine, immunological, neurological, psychological, and anatomical interactions. Be wary of individuals claiming credentials such as “certified ayurvedic practitioner,” advanced ayurvedic practitioner,”or any credential which includes the qualifier practitioner, therapist, counselor, etc. Ayurvedic Medicine is a medical profession practiced by Ayurvedic physicians.

--Also, some actual U.S. licensed physicians who claim to be Ayurvedic physicians have in reality completed some very questionable "training programs" here in the U.S. These are all extremely inadequate and deficient. Always ask where a person received their training. It should be at one of the Indian Ayurvedic colleges for a period of 5-5 1/2 years minimum.
