Liquid Decoctions and Infusions
Asavas and Aristas are liquid medicinal preparations made by adding herbs in either decoction form (Aristas) or in powder form (Asavas) to boiling water. Jaggery, a semisolid juice from the sugar cane plant, and the flower petals from Woodfordia fructosa are also added to promote a slow, gentle fermentation. All ingredients are kept in a covered earthenware pot until the fermentation is completed. The decanted fluid is the medicinal part. By allowing the decoction to generate a small amount of alcohol, different plant components are infused into the solution than if it were prepared simply with an aqueous medium.
