Ayurveda arose over 2500 years ago in India and is widely considered to be the first complete medical system based on holistic therapies. Ayurveda and Yoga were originally inseparable. While physical health, through Ayurveda, makes possible the evolution of consciousness, the refinement of consciousness, through Yoga, in turn promotes a state of optimum health.
Ether, air, fire, water, and earth are the five universal elements manifesting in the body as three fundamental energies: Vata (ether and air), Pitta (fire), and Kapha (water and earth). These three energies are known as the Tridosha. All Ayurvedic therapies focus on the modification and balancing of the Tridosha.
This workshop will begin with a slide-assisted lecture on the basic concepts of Ayurveda unique in that it encompasses not only science but the spiritual realm as well. Dr. Gerson will draw directly from the ancient sutras, avoiding the popular superficial presentation of the material. Participants will gain an unprecendented in-depth understanding of Ayurvedic concepts, and will learn how to identify and address imbalances. The second half of this workshop will focus on the practical therapies used in Ayurveda to maintain health and treat disease with a special emphasis on diet, traditional Ayurvedic self-massage techniques and common herbal and spice preparations.
Scott Gerson, M.D., Ph.D. is the medical director of The National Institute Of Ayurvedic Medicine, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, New York Medical College, and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Ayurved, University of Pune (India). He is the author of Ayurveda: The Ancient Indian Healing Art (NIAM Press 1993), The Ayurvedic Approach To Diet and Weight Loss (Lotus Press, 2002) and The Clinician’s Guide to Ayurvedic Medicine (in press).
