Correspondence Course In Ayurvedic Medicine (New and Updated, March 2009)

(Also available as e-book. See "Products" section)

The National Institute Of Ayurvedic Medicine, in association with The Institute Of Indian Medicine in Poona India, is proud to offer its Correspondence Course in Ayurvedic Medicine. Consisting of over 500 pages of information including over 60 original charts and diagrams organized in four books, this course was modeled after the curriculum taught at the renowned University of Pune College Of Ayurveda.

The NIAM Ayurvedic Correspondence Course covers all the main aspects of Ayurvedic theory, diagnosis and practice. This comprehensive home study course is not just an introduction to Ayurveda composed by unqualified, questionably credentialed, unlicensed individuals but an exhaustive clinical Ayurvedic teaching program written by true fully tenured professors of Ayurvedic Medicine from four Indian Ayurvedic colleges. It is immediately apparent that this course material reflects the experience, knowledge, and devotion borne of years of study and application of Ayurvedic principles. There is no comparable course of its authorship, integrity, and depth of material. The material has also been edited by Professor Scott Gerson, M.D., M. Phil. (Ay), Ph.D. (Ay). Although covering all aspects of Ayurveda, the course has a special emphasis on diet, food, and herbal medicine—detailing western as well as Indian herbs. Thus, by including foods and herbs growing in North America, South America, Europe, and Australia as well as in India, this course provides an accessible model for treatment in the West and throughout most of the planet. Written by a consortium of experts in each specialty, the material goes into great depth into each subject and will remain as an excellent reference compendium for the student or physician for years to come.

This Correspondence Course, which required over ten years to complete, was conceived by its authors to be a way to provide the same detailed Ayurvedic information taught at the most prestigious Ayurvedic medical colleges to individuals who cannot spend the necessary time in India.

Study and completion of the course will give the student a solid foundation to pursue further advanced training in Ayurveda. Included in the course are sections on the history, fundamental concepts, concept of disease, constitutional analysis, Ayurvedic diagnosis, pulse diagnosis, treatment of disease, Ayurvedic herbal medicines, daily and seasonal regimens, marma points, pharmacology, Ayurvedic dietetics, Panchakarma therapies, Rasayana (health promoting) herbal preparations, concept of immunity, and many, many other topics. In addition, there is a tremendous amount of detailed information on the treatment of specific conditions and diseases. All the clinical information was written by actively working Ayurvedic physicians , including Scott Gerson, M.D., who are among India's most respected physician-teachers of Ayurveda.

The course is designed for health care professionals as well as motivated non-professional students. It has been taken by physicians, osteopaths, chR>iropractors, nurses, acupuncturists, herbalists, massage therapists, yoga teachers, and psychologists. However, there is no previous medical training required for those wishing to take the course and many non-professionals have successfully mastered the material.

The Institute Of Indian Medicine has stipulated that only 24 students be enrolled each academic year.

Since 1989 over four hundred students have taken the course, which is the most complete correspondence course on Ayurvedic Medicine offered in the West. It is the basis of Ayurvedic programs taught in the initial two years of several Ayurvedic colleges in India.

Upon completion of the course, students will have the opportunity to take a comprehensive examination consisting of 250 multiple choice questions (open book). This examination is sent under separate cover upon request 12 to 24 months after receiving the course. A passing grade of 70% or greater will qualify a student to receive a Certificate of Completion issued jointly by both of the governing bodies. This certificate is recognized by the Council Of Indian Education. There is a $35 administrative fee required to receive the Certificate upon notification of a passing grade.

Students who wish to qualify for the Certificate Of Completion must submit their exams not less than 12 months nor more than 24 months after receiving the course material. Students who do not wish to receive Certificate Of Completion may also submit their exams for grading.

Format: The course comes in four booklets, which are mailed out to the student all at once. Each booklet is 8 ½ X 11 and spiral bound for easy usage. We acknowledge that there are typographical errors and format inconsistencies throughout the material. This is due to the English language limitations of some of the authors and cannot be corrected until they themselves consent to edit their work. There is a time limit of two years for completing the material and passing the written exam in order to be eligible for the Certificate of Completion. After that time period, special permission must be obtained.

The cost of the Correspondence Course In Ayurvedic Medicine is non-refundable US $425 plus shipping. Please note that the entire fee is non-refundable.
