The National Institute Of Ayurvedic Medicine, in collaboration with The Institute Of Indian Medicine and The University of Pune, is pleased to announce the next starting class of a complete and formal certificate course of study in Ayurvedic Medicine, to start on October 6, 2008. The certificate course endeavors to provide a comprehensive and authentic professional education for both the lay person and the health professional seeking to incorporate Ayurvedic medical principles into their self-care regimen or existing practice in caring for others.
The Course
The Certificate Course In Ayurveda will be comprised of a three-year program. Students who lack the required courses in human anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry may be required to take additional modules in these subjects.
Each academic year will be structured into three trimesters. Each trimester will be six weeks (weekends) long.
Each six-week trimester will be followed by a six-week period of self-study and review.
Classes will take place on Fridays from 6:30-9:30 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 am-5:00 pm.
Classes will be conducted by Senior Faculty members drawn from several of IndiaÍs most prestigious Ayurvedic Colleges including professors of medicine, pharmacologists, botanists, and scholars.

Although we already have a significant number of inquiries from serious candidates, we are limiting the class size to forty for the initial three years.
The Cost
The tuition for the Certificate Course in Ayurvedic Medicine is US $5500 per year for students beginning in 2003. We have made every effort to keep the tuition as low as possible. The necessity of having professors from India come to New York and be accommodated, in some cases with a family member, is an expense unique to our institution. The other usual administrative costs and the leasing of NYC space are also significant. In the true spirit of Ayurveda, we are committed to running this school in a fair and only modestly profitable manner.
Accreditation
Currently, as of this writing, New York State does not recognize Ayurveda as an independent discipline and does not currently grant a license to practice Ayurveda. If you currently hold a license in a related field of health care (massage, physical therapy, nutrition, chiropractor, acupuncture/Traditional Chinese Medicine), you can incorporate Ayurvedic principles into your existing practice. The New York State Board Of Education is aware of the school and is working with us to meet its academic standards should the legislature be amended to recognize Ayurveda.
Aim of the Course
The aim of the course is to teach the student the health assessment and diagnostic skills of Ayurveda coupled with detailed knowledge of Ayurvedic treatments and preventative medicine techniques. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to continue their education through self study, seminars, and internships in India (see below).
As part of their educational experience, each student will be encouraged to become an Ayurvedic patient and experience the various processes of detoxification, meditation, yoga practice, Ayurvedic nutrition, herbal therapies, panchakarma and other appropriate therapies firsthand.
This course will lay the foundation for an authentic education and practical training towards the safe and efficacious practice of the Ayurvedic system of self-healthcare. We envision this certificate course to be a solid and respected platform from which to pursue advanced and more specialized study. Successful completion of this course may eventually qualify the student for registration as a licensed practitioner of Ayurvedic Medicine when and if the New York State laws change. These changes have already taken place for students of chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, and nutrition, and several States are currently considering extending their laws to include Ayurveda. We feel it is only a matter of time before New York, historically a leader in alternative education, recognizes the time-tested discipline of Ayurvedic Medicine.
Internships and Apprenticeships
Internships and apprenticeships in Indian institutions and with experienced Ayurvedic physicians can be arranged after successful completion of the full three-year course. We encourage every student to take advantage of this unique opportunity. These post-graduate programs can last from three to twelve months. The recommendation of the Dean of the NIAM College of Ayurveda is required in order to participate in the India programs. The cost of the internship and apprenticeship are determined by the length and location of the program.
Setting The Bar High
Given the prediction that Ayurveda will soon be recognized in New York and other States, we have chosen this time to initiate our three-year training program in Ayurvedic Medicine. The course provides the same comprehensive and stable foundation for future U.S. practitioners as is enjoyed by Indian students.
The information in this course will include the most up-to-date Ayurvedic research and refinements but will in no way distort, dilute, or westernize it to suit modern bias. All the information will be taught be experienced vaidyas and will preserve the spirit of Ayurveda and its traditions. Students completing this course will radiate and exude the true essence of Ayurveda which will instantly set them apart from the many charlatans and unqualified self-promoters who are already increasing their ranks.
The Curriculum
Year One (Six required modules)
The aim of the first academic year is to become familiar with Sanskrit, the language of Ayurveda, and to learn the basic principles, Ayurvedic anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and begin the study of Ayurvedic herbal medicines.

The aim of the second academic year is to learn the principles of diagnosis and treatment of disease as well as research, and to deepen the studentÍs knowledge of Ayurvedic pharmacology and specific herbal therapies.

The aim of the third academic year is to crystallize the students knowledge through study of the diagnosis and treatment specific disease conditions and to cover the more common presentations of the pediatric patient and the adult female patient.
