All patients are examined in the traditional Ayurvedic manner. In addition, if warranted, blood tests, urine tests, cardiograms, CT scans and other modern diagnostic tools are used to clarify one’s condition as much as possible. As in any authentic Ayurvedic medical practice treatments, as detailed below, may include herbal therapies, dietary recommendations, ongoing yoga therapies, meditation practices, lifestyle modification, massage and other forms of body work, Ayurvedic marma and needling therapies, and individualized detoxification programs.

Who Should See An Ayurvedic Physician

Dr. Gerson has been practicing clinical Ayurvedic Medicine for nineteen years and is now well-known for specializing in diagnostically difficult cases which are generally referred to him through conventional physicians, other alternative health care providers, and word of mouth. However, Ayurveda offers an excellent approach to many, many simpler conditions and diseases for which modern medicine has no solution. No condition is too small for Ayurveda and should be addressed if it is causing distress of any kind. Below is a partial list of conditions commonly treated through Ayurvedic Medicine.

Preparing For An Ayurvedic Medical Consultation

Most importantly, arrive for your consultation 10-15 minutes before the given appointment time. This is not only a show of respect and helpful to the staff, but also important because it allows you to acclimate energetically to the office environment before your pulse examination.

If you decide to consult with Dr. Gerson, it is a good idea to organize your medical history and your questions in writing a day or two beforehand and bring those notes with you. If there is time, try to obtain a copy of any blood tests or other relevant procedures you had in the last 1-2 years. If you cannot do this it is not a problem.

You also should try and get a good night’s sleep the night before but no specific dietary guidelines are necessary for your visit. .

Ayurveda places a large emphasis on the mind and emotions. Be aware that you may be asked some personal questions by the doctor but you are not obliged to discuss anything that makes you uncomfortable. .

If possible, wear somewhat loose-fitting clothing. You will also be asked to remove your shoes before entering the consultation room. .

Ayurvedic Recommendations: What To Expect

Individualized recommendations are made based on the individual's medical condition, body type, and on the seasons. Recent scientific advances regarding specific conditions are also incorporated into the regimen when applicable.

DIET Our health largely depends on how we nourish ourselves. Ayurveda teaches that we should learn to recognize the six tastes which are present in our foods to help guide us in our dietary choices which will vary according to our body type and the seasons.

AYURVEDIC SELF MASSAGE For many individuals Ayurveda recommends a daily oil massage to enliven and balance the physiology. You will be instructed in the preparation of an appropriate oil for you and given instructions on how to properly perform the massage.

EXERCISE Different body types require different quantities and types of exercise to remain healthy. The appropriate type and amount of exercise will be prescribed according to your individual needs.

HERBS Ayurvedic herbal preparations strengthen deficiencies and eliminate excesses. Their primary action is to balance and help integrate the energetic aspects of metabolic processes. In addition, an impressive and growing body of research now supports the efficacy of Ayurvedic medicines for many specific conditions.

YOGA ASANAS and PRANAYAMA These related disciplines are often useful in opening obstructed energy channels and bring strength and balance to the physiology. Yoga asanas (postures) are taught privately or in small groups (10-15 students) and Pranayama is available to appropriate patients to help correct specific imbalances.

MIND-BODY TECHNIQUES Dr. Gerson may recommend various techniques aimed at strengthening the mind, improving the mind-body connection, and reducing mental stress.

DAILY and SEASONAL ROUTINES For optimal health, the biological rhythms of the human physiology need to be kept in balance with the daily and seasonal cycles in nature. You will receive instructions for varying your daily routine to better harmonize with these natural cycles.

AYURVEDIC PURIFICATION AND REVITALIZATION THERAPY: PANCHAKARMA THERAPY

According to Ayurvedic medical theory, one of the earliest stages of disease involves the obstruction of the body's various channels (shrotas) by accumulated impurities. Panchakarma therapy involves a series of spa-like yet powerful physical therapies which correspond to the body's own natural cleansing functions.
